an honest comparison

WordPress vs Squarespace for dietitians

Squarespace is easier to run yourself. WordPress gives you more control, and it's much easier to take with you. Which is better depends on how much you want to do alone.

The short version

| | Squarespace | WordPress with Itersi | |---|---|---| | Who does the work | Mostly you | We do | | Moving away | Partial export only | Your full copy, if you buy it | | Booking tools | Links and embeds | Links and embeds, with more options | | Design | Strong templates, within its limits | Built around your practice | | Upkeep | Squarespace handles the platform | We handle it on our plans |

Moving your site later

Squarespace says that its export gives you a WordPress file with only part of your site. Store pages, product blocks, audio and video blocks, some page types, style settings and custom CSS don't export, and images must be saved by hand. Source: Squarespace Help, "Export your site content".

A WordPress site is files and a database, which any suitable host can run.

Control

With WordPress, we choose your server, how images load and what goes on each page. Squarespace handles much of that for you, which is simpler, but gives you less say.

Squarespace is a fine choice if

  • You enjoy building and tweaking your own site
  • You rarely need to change it
  • You don't expect to leave
  • You'd rather pay a platform directly

WordPress with Itersi is a good fit if

  • You don't want to touch the website at all
  • You want the choice to own and move your site
  • You want a real person to message when something needs to change

good questions

Common questions

Can I move my Squarespace site to WordPress?

Partly. Squarespace exports some content to a WordPress file, but store pages, some blocks, style settings and custom CSS don't come across, and images need saving by hand. So a move usually means a rebuild using your content.

Will I lose my Google rankings if I move?

Good planning protects most of what you've built, including redirects from your old addresses to the new ones. But nobody can honestly guarantee rankings through a move.

Should I leave Squarespace if it's working for me?

No, not without a reason. If your site brings the right clients and you're happy looking after it, stay where you are.
